Internalize a new song

You will learn the framework for internalizing new songs in this course before you grab your guitar and start playing.

Every guitar site wants you to be dependent on their tutorials in order to learn a song that's new to you. I'm here to provide the framework you can use to play nearly any song you want to learn.

This goes against literally every other guitar instruction site on the internet. They all want to sell you one more lesson, one more song tutorial, one more...

But you don't need one more. You need to know HOW to listen and internalize new songs and you will be set for life. Of course, your skills will improve over time as you use them, but you don't need to keep waiting on a tutorial video before you can learn a new song.

Is this course for me?

This course is built for any musician, but the skills you’ll gain from it are similar to what a band leader or director would use on a regular basis.

You will learn how to learn and analyze a song. You will be able to listen to everything going on all at once and pick out specific instruments and parts. You will focus on developing your ear as a musician to recognize sections, instruments, dynamics, and parts.

We start at a high level and go down to the instrument level as we analyze what we hear. This will give you the foundation to recognize guitar-specific rhythms, patterns, progressions, and chords.

Prerequisites

There is no requirement to be able to play specific chords or strum patterns. You can benefit from this course if you are a brand new musician or have been playing for many years.

To be clear this Learn Any Song course teaches you the step before picking up your guitar and starting to play any new song.

Course structure

This text-based (for now) course will walk through these steps:

1. Listen before playing
2. Identify song sections
3. Identify instruments
4. Identify dynamics
5. Decide what you can play on guitar

Once you know how to learn any song, you'll be able to Play Any Song (course coming soon).

Ideally, you should follow along with the order of lessons as they build on each other as we go through.

What you need

To complete this course fully, there is a hands-on activity involving physical paper and a pencil. Yes, you will want a piece of paper and a pencil with an eraser. They are simply notes to yourself following my framework, and after the course is over you will be free to use whatever technology you want to learn that next song.

After 20 years I still use a piece of paper as it offers me the most freedom and doesn't require a subscription.

To be successful in this course, you will need:

• A piece of paper (one per song)
• A pencil
• An eraser
• A way to play a song (an app, website, or CD player)
